George Ellery Hale
Hale, George Ellery (1868–1938), U.S. astronomer who discovered the magnetic fields of sunspots and invented (c.1890) the spectroheliograph. His name is commemorated by the Hale Observatories in California. He also founded the Palomar Observatory and founded and directed the Yerkes and Mt. Wilson observatories.
