Hannibal Hamlin



Hamlin, Hannibal (1809–91), U.S. vice president under Abraham Lincoln, 1861–65. Originally a Democrat, he joined the Republicans in 1856 because of his antislavery views. He was a senator from Maine, 1848–56 and 1869–81, and an ardent Reconstructionist.
