Learned Hand



Hand, Learned (1872–1961), U.S. jurist noted for his profoundly reasoned rulings in almost 3,000 cases. He served as a federal judge in New York from 1909 to 1951. Although never a Supreme Court justice, he was highly influential, known especially as a supporter of free speech. He was often referred to as “the 10th justice of the Supreme Court.”
