Hangzhou

Hangzhou, or Hangchow (pop. 1,340,000), city of eastern China, capital of Zhejiang province. The city is a tourist center and manufactures chemical and electronic products, iron, steel, and motor vehicles. Historically it was a center of silk and tea production. The city was rebuilt after its destruction during the Taiping Rebellion (1850–64). It was occupied by Japan (1937–45).
