Hanoi
Hanoi (pop. 3,056,100), capital of North Vietnam (1954–76) and of united Vietnam since 1976. Founded in the 7th century, it is an important shipping, industrial, and transport center on the Red River. The city suffered heavily from U.S. bombings during the Vietnam War.
