Hanover

Hanover (pop. 514,400), or Hannover, city on the Leine River in northwest Germany, capital of the state of Lower Saxony. A railway and manufacturing center, Hanover produces iron, steel, and machinery, and is known for its annual industrial fair. The city was chartered in 1241, and was the capital of the electorate of Hanover from 1692 and of the kingdom of Hanover 1815–66. It has been rebuilt since its bombing during World War II.
