Harpy eagle



Harpy eagle, large bird of prey (Harpia harpyja) of the hawk family, native to tropical forests of the Western Hemisphere. This large eagle weighs over 10 lbs (4.5 kg) and may have a wingspan of 7 ft (2 m). It has a black-crested gray head, black back, and white underside. It preys on monkeys, sloths, opossums, and porcupines. The harpy eagle is named for a flying predatory creature of Greek mythology.
