Hartford
Hartford (pop. 136,400), capital and largest city of Connecticut, situated near the center of the state on the Connecticut River. Hartford is called the insurance capital of the world, and more policies are underwritten there than anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere. The headquarters of more than 30 insurance companies are located in and around the city, which was an important commercial and intellectual center in the early years of the United States. Today the city produces a wide range of manufactured goods, including electrical equipment, precision tools, office machines, and airplane parts.
