Hashemite Dynasty

Hashemite Dynasty, Arab royal family claiming descent from the grandfather of the prophet Muhammad, hereditary sharifs of Mecca from the 11th century until 1919. After World War I the Hashemites Faisal I and Abdullah Ibn Hussein became kings of Iraq and Jordan respectively; Abdullah's grandson Hussein is the present king of Jordan.
