S(amuel) l(chiyé) Hayakawa



Hayakawa, S(amuel) l(chiyé) (1906– ), Canadian-born U.S. language expert, specializing in the study of semantics. He was also a U.S. senator. Hayakawa became president of San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University) in 1969 amid numerous student protests and became famous for his firm stand against them. After retiring in 1973, Hayakawa, a Republican, represented California in the U.S. Senate from 1977 to 1983. His books include Language in Thoughts and Action (1941) and Symbol, Status and Personality (1963).
