Phoebe Apperson Hearst



Hearst, Phoebe Apperson (1842–1919), U.S. philanthropist; mother of William Randolph Hearst. A former teacher, Hearst strongly supported education and cofounded the National Congress of Mothers, which later became the National Congress of Parents and Teachers and sprouted local parent-teacher associations (PTAs). She funded one of the first kindergarten associations in California.
