Heinrich Heine



Heine, Heinrich (1797–1856), German romantic lyric poet and essayist. His best-known work, Book of Songs (1827), was influenced by German folk songs. His prose writings, such as Travel Pictures (1827–31), although poignant, are often satirical. His poems have been set to music by composers including Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, and Mendelssohn.
