Hell Gate



Hell Gate, channel in the East River in New York City. Probably named by early Dutch settlers for its turbulent current and dangerous rock formations, it was reconstructed in the late 1800s and used for travel. It is spanned by the Hell Gate Bridge, the Triborough Bridge, and a railroad bridge.
