Helvetians



Helvetians, tribe that lived just east of the Roman province of Gaul, now northwestern Switzerland. When Switzerland was conquered by the Roman emperor Augustus, who ruled from 27 B.C. to A.D. 14, the Helvetians were forced to adopt the language and customs of Rome. The area as still sometimes called Helvetia by its residents.
