Henry the Navigator



Henry the Navigator (1394–1460), Portuguese prince, third son of King John I of Portugal, whose active interest inaugurated Portuguese maritime exploration and expansion overseas. He sponsored the exploration and mapping of the west coast of Africa, and his expeditions discovered the Madeira and the Azore islands and rounded Cape Verde.
