Aleksander Ivanovich Herzen



Herzen, Aleksander Ivanovich (1812–70), Russian writer and early advocate of socialism. He was banished to the countryside in 1834 for subversive activities and left Russia for England permanently in 1847. His weekly journal Kolokol (1857–62) was smuggled into Russia and influenced the revolutionary movement there. One of his more notable books is My Past and Thoughts (1855).
