Hessian fly



Hessian fly, small, biting insect (Mayetiola destructor) so named because it was brought to North America from Europe in straw used for the horses of Hessian soldiers employed by the British during the American Revolution. The larvae of the Hessian fly burrow into wheat stems and destroy them.
