Hibernation

Hibernation, protective mechanism whereby certain animals reduce their bodies' activity and sleep through winter. Animals prepare by storing extra fat several weeks before the onset of hibernation. When temperatures drop, the animal's pulse rate and breathing drop to a minimum.
