High jump

High jump, track and field event. It requires jumping over a bar 6–8 ft (1.83–2.44 m) high and 12 ft (3.66 m) long. From a running start, jumpers must clear the bar and land in a cushioned pit on the other side. Two styles are used in high jumping, the “straddle” (forward) and the “Fosbury flop” (backward). Athletes are scored on their best jumps, but those who knock the bar down 3 consecutive times are disqualified.
