Hilo



Hilo (pop. 35,400), city on the eastern shore of Hawaii Island. The state's second-largest city and Hawaii County's seat of government, it is also the southernmost large city in the United States. Ancient Polynesian sailors settled Hilo, and a U.S. mission was opened c.1820. It is a leading exporter of sugar cane and coffee and a hub for tourists visiting the nearby volcanic region.
