Hoffer, Eric (1902–1983), self-educated U.S. author and philosopher. A migratory worker and longshoreman until 1967, he won immediate acclaim with his first book, The True Believer (1951), a study of mass movements. The Passionate State of Mind (1955), a volume of maxims, followed.
