Hans Hofmann
Hofmann, Hans (1880–1966), German-born U.S. artist and teacher, prominent in the abstract expressionism movement. His vigorous and colorful style, inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, is exemplified by The Gate (1959). In 1934 he opened the influential Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in New York City.
