Hugo von Hofmannsthal

Hofmannsthal, Hugo von (1874–1929), Austrian neoromantic poet and dramatist. His early style was influenced by the German poet Stefan George (1868–1933) and the Pre-Raphaelites. His adaptation of Sophocles' Elektra (1903) was made into an opera by Richard Strauss in 1909, beginning a long collaboration, including Der Rosenkavalier (1911), Ariadne auf Naxos (1912), and Die Frau ohne Schatten (1919). His poems, plays such as Jedermann (Everyman, 1911), and opera librettos make him a major figure of Austrian literature.
