William Hogarth



Hogarth, William (1697–1764), British painter and engraver. He is best known for his 3 series of moralistic and satirical engravings, The Harlot's Progress (1732), The Rake's Progress (1735), and Marriage à la Mode (1745). His first success was as a portraitist, and some of his finest works, such as Captain Thomas Coram (1740) and The Shrimp Girl (1760), are in this field.
