Sherlock Holmes

Holmes, Sherlock, fictional detective created by the English author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes solves difficult crimes through observation and deduction. A complex character, he has knowledge of chemistry, literature, and the arts, and is an accomplished violinist. He is assisted by his close friend and partner, Dr. John Watson. Holmes first appeared in the novel A Study in Scarlet (1887).
