Homelessness



Homelessness, term coined in the 1980s to describe the growing condition of mostly city-dwelling people who have no permanent place to live. In the United States, causes of homelessness range from untreated mental illness to joblessness among the poor and lack of low-income housing. The total number of homeless people in the U.S. is thought to be in the millions.
