Hoosac tunnel
Hoosac tunnel, rock tunnel in western Massachusetts, in the Berkshire Hills. Completed in 1876, it was the first tunnel to be blasted out with nitroglycerin and drilled through with a power tool powered by compressed air. A total of 136 lives were lost during the construction of the 4 mi (6 km) tunnel.
