Gerard Manley Hopkins

Hopkins, Gerard Manley (1844–1889), English poet and Jesuit priest. Hopkins's work was experimental, using natural speech and “sprung rhythm” rather than syllable counts. Unappreciated in his lifetime, his poetry has had great influence in the 20th century. “The Windhover” and “God's Grandeur” are two of his major poems. His work was published posthumously in 1918.
