Horn

Horn, in music, brass wind instrument. Horns are derived from the animal horns used by primitive societies. Metal was found to produce a better tone, and horns became increasingly sophisticated and complex. Horns were introduced into orchestral music in the early 18th centrury. Valved horns (such as the trumpet) were developed in the 19th century.
