Horsefly

Horsefly, any of various two-winged flies (family Tabanidae), so called because they bite horses, as well as other mammals. Only the females bite, piercing the skin with specialized mouthparts and sucking blood. Female horseflies require a blood-meal before laying eggs. They transmit a few diseases, but their main significance as pests is in the sting of their bite.
