Hotel, a building that provides the public with overnight lodging. Although the basic purpose is to provide rooms for travelers to sleep in, many hotels also provide meals, entertainment, and other personal services. There are 4 major types of hotel: commercial hotels, residential hotels, resort hotels, and motor hotels (motels). Hotels date from ancient times, and can be found in almost any country in the world.
