Richars Howe and William



Howe, Richars and William, name of 2 brothers who were British commanders in the American Revolutionary War. Richard, Earl Howe (1726–99) commanded the British fleet in America (1776–8) but is best known for his victory over the French off Ushant (1794) as commander of the Channel Fleet. William, 5th Viscount Howe (1729–1814) was a commander in the British army (1775–8). He won 2 major victories in 1777 at Brandy wine and Germantown.
