Edmond Hoyle



Hoyle, Edmond (1672–1769), English authority on card and board games, especially whist. He wrote A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist (1742), as well as treatises on other games, including chess and backgammon. The expression “according to Hoyle,” meaning according to the rules, derives from his name.
