Cordell Hull



Hull, Cordell (1871–1955), U.S. statesman, secretary of state (1933–44) under F.D. Roosevelt. He was a congressman (1907–21 and 1923–30) and senator (1931–33). As secretary of state he developed the “Good Neighbor” policy in relations with South American states and helped maintain relations with the USSR in World War II. After the war he was a major force behind U.S. acceptance of the UN, for which he was awarded the 1945 Nobel Peace Prize.
