Doris Humphrey



Humphrey, Doris (1895–1958), U.S. modern dancer and choreographer. Influenced by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, she set up a school and company with Charles Weidman (1928) to develop her own expressive style, based upon her innovative theories of movement. Humphrey founded (with Martha Graham) the U.S. modern-dance form.
