Huntington

Huntington (pop. 312,529), largest city in West Virginia, located on the Ohio River. It was founded in 1871 as the western terminus for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and was named for Collis P. Huntington, the president of that railroad. Numerous and varied industries produce such important commercial goods as nickel and nickel alloys, furniture, railroad equipment, shoes, and glass. Huntington suffered many serious floods before the construction of an 11-mi long (18-km) flood wall that now protects the city. Marshall University is located there.
