Hussein I

Hussein I (1935– ), king of Jordan since 1953. His policies are generally pro-Western, and he is a spokesperson for moderation in the conflict between the Arab nations and Israel. Jordan's loss of the West Bank in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war led to civil war in 1970, when King Hussein gained firmer control over the country. He declined to endorse the Camp David agreements between Israel and Egypt. His fourth wife, Elizabeth Halaby, an American, whom he married in 1978, became Queen Noor.
