Index of Forbidden Books
Index of Forbidden Books (Index Librorum Prohibitorum), official list of books banned by the Roman Catholic Church as being in doctrinal or moral error. A book could be removed from the index by expurgation of offending passages, and special permission could be given to read prohibited books. The index ceased publication in 1966.
