Albert Sydney Johnston
Johnston, Albert Sydney (1803–62), brilliant Confederate general, secretary of war for the Texas Republic (1838–40). Confederate second-in-command, he was driven back by superior forces on the Mississippi-Allegheny front. His daring strategy almost won the battle of Shiloh, but he was mortally wounded in the first day's fighting.
