Adoniram Judson

Judson, Adoniram (1788–1850), U.S. missionary. His 30-year work in Burma resulted in the first translation of the Bible into Burmese (1834) and an English-Burmese dictionary (1849). Judson entered the ministry and helped organize a Congregationalist missionary society, which sent him to India in 1812. Disagreements with certain Congregationalist practices led him into the Baptist ministry. He helped the Baptists organize a similar missionary society, and in 1813 he was assigned to Burma.
