Kaliningrad



Kaliningrad (pop. 406,000), port city in western Russia, on the mouth of the Pregolya River, which flows into the Baltic Sea. Formerly called Königsberg, Kaliningrad was founded in 1255 as part of East Prussia. In 1945 it was absorbed by the Soviet Union and renamed Kaliningrad. Today it is a naval base for the Baltic Fleet. Fishing, machine building, and shipbuilding are the main industries.
