Kangaroo



Kangaroo, herbivorous, marsupial mammal of the family Macropodidae, with large hind feet, strong hind legs, and a tail used for balancing, native to Australia and nearby islands. Like other marsupial females, female kangaroos have a pouch in which they carry and suckle their young. The red kangaroo (Megaleia rufa) of the Australian plains may reach 7 ft (2.1 m) in height and over 200 lb (90 kg) in weight. Its top speed is about 40 miles (64 km) an hour, with each hop extending as much as 18 ft (5.5 m). Other members of the kangaroo family, classified as genus Macropus, include wallabies and tree kangaroos.
