Karelia

Karelia, self-governing republic in northwestern Russia. Its capital city is Petrozavodsk. Bordering Finland, it has an area of about 70,000 sq mi (181,000 sq km), with vast pine forests and more than 2,000 lakes. Lumbering, forest industries, iron working, and fishing are the major sources of employment.
