Kathmandu



Kathmandu (pop. 393,500), capital of Nepal, 4,500 ft (1,370 m) above sea level in a Himalayan valley in central Nepal. The city lies on an ancient route from India to Tibet and China and is a vital commercial and administrative center. Important sites include temples, the royal palace, and Sanskrit libraries.
