Katmai National Park

Katmai National Park, large wilderness region covering 4,430,125 acres (1,792,810 hectares) in southwestern Alaska. The violent eruption of the Novarupta volcano in 1912 eradicated Mount Katmai and created a broad dish of ash known as The Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. There are fifteen volcanoes in the area, although none are very active. The Katmai National Park has a rich range of wildlife, including Alaskan brown bears, sea otters, and bald eagles.
