Kenneth David Kaunda



Kaunda, Kenneth David (1924– ), African political leader, president of Zambia (1964–91). From 1953 he worked for African rule in Northern Rhodesia, which was then a British dependency, suffering exile and imprisonment. Released in 1960, he headed the new United National Independence Party, and became Zambia's first president upon independence (1964). In December 1997, Kaunda was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the attempted coup in October. In 1998 he was acquitted and left active politics.
