Kharkov



Kharkov (pop. 1,536,000), city in Ukraine, at the confluence of the Kharkov, Lopan, and Udy rivers. Founded in the 18th century, Kharkov is now the fifth largest city in the Soviet Union and was the capital of the Ukraine until 1934, when it was superseded by Kiev. An industrialized city, Kharkov produces metals, chemicals, and heavy machinery.
