Kickapoo

Kickapoo, Algonquian-speaking Native American tribe living in the Great Lakes region at the time of the arrival of European settlers. The Kickapoo lived by hunting, fishing, and farming. Opposed to the Europeans' incursion in their lands, they became formidable warriors, fighting against the United States in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Forced to cede their land to the United States in 1819, most went to Kansas or Missouri, but later some went to Mexico. Today only 800 Kickapoo remain in Oklahoma, Kansas, and along the Texas-Mexico border.
