Kiel
Kiel (pop. 246,600), city in northwest Germany, on the Baltic Sea at the eastern end of the Kiel Canal. An important shipping and industrial center, it was Germany's chief naval base, 1871–1945. Kiel was founded in 1242 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1284.
