William Lyon Mackenzie King
King, William Lyon Mackenzie (1874–1950), Canadian statesman, Liberal prime minister (1921–30, 1935–48). He established Canada's right to act independently of Great Britain in international affairs, introduced old age pensions (Canada's first national social security scheme), and directed the Canadian war effort in World War II.
